'Things Being Various'  (Louis McNeice)

Come April

world is marvel.

Pinched cold,

green rises

through rust-dead

sticks and straws;

woodpecker

rattles

from tree-ambush,

trigger-happy;

wild duck

over water-silk

arrow,

into the wind turn

touch down

wingtip precise;

heads bob

where clouds

blur-edge

white into blue.

By water's edge

I shuffle-dance,

joy up spending;

cold fingers

fumble pen

misquote MacNeice:

'Things being miracle'.

O Angels

and Alleluias!

(Withins Clough, Saturday morning, 20th. April 1991)
